When I first began investigating the concept of “magic” and its meaning, I was immediately drawn to the idea of spell-casting as a uniquely female endeavor, synonymous with both witchcraft and femininity. Throughout history women have been considered the creators, the intuitive observers, and the sensitive perceivers within their societies. I have always thought of women as having a unique ability to quietly bring about change through sheer force of will. Women are magical, by nature. As the theme of this show was portable magic, my focus was on small, simple objects which possess mysterious properties.
Each piece of art focused on a specific earth magic spell and was painted using a combination of coffee, tea, blood, and gouache paint.
